India's pet food industry is rapidly emerging as a competitive global player, driven by rising pet ownership, rapid urbanisation and changing consumer preferences. With a pet population exceeding 42 million in 2024, including over 36.8 million dogs, the domestic market has reached US$ 228.53 million and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.6% through 2030. This growth is being fuelled by increasing demand for premium, sustainable and health-focused pet nutrition.
As global demand patterns evolve, particularly across the GCC, retailers and consumers alike are placing greater emphasis on trust, transparency and ingredient integrity. Prajith Moorkoth, Executive Director, Golden Praxis, highlights how this shift is reshaping sourcing strategies:
"Pet owners across the GCC are increasingly seeking premium pet food built on trust, transparency and clean-label formulations. This shift is prompting retailers to explore new sourcing regions, creating strong opportunities for Indian pet food companies focused on quality and advanced formulations."
Globally, the pet food sector continues to expand at pace, with imports valued at US$ 47.6 billion in 2024, growing at an 8.6% five-year CAGR. This momentum is underpinned by the ongoing pet humanisation trend and rising demand for specialised and functional diets.
Beyond cost competitiveness, India's evolving role in global supply chains is also being recognised. Prajith Moorkoth further adds:
"India's role on the world stage is deepening. Built on a foundation of rich farmland and a drive for higher standards, the country is now seen as more than an efficient producer; it is emerging as an innovative and resilient partner for global brands building secure, future-ready supply chains."
While India's pet food export volumes remain modest compared to established global producers, the growth trajectory is strong. Exports of dog and cat food increased from US$ 37 million in 2019 to US$ 73 million in 2024, registering a CAGR of 14.6%, reflecting growing acceptance in international markets.
With abundant raw materials, cost-efficient production, improving quality benchmarks and supportive trade initiatives, India is well-positioned to expand its footprint and play a more influential role in the fast-growing global pet nutrition industry.
